Ámsterdam (First part)

Hallo! Comenzamos un nuevo mes y que mejor forma que visitando otro punto esencial en el marco europeo, la Venecia del norte: Ámsterdam.

Hallo! We started a new month and what better way than visiting another key point in the European framework, the Venice of the North: Amsterdam.

Esta vez el viaje fue de cuatro días, así que me extenderé un poco más en cuanto a posts se refiere para explicar cada detalle de esta nueva andadura.

Antes de partir estuve buscando por internet y encontré algunos tours a pie gratuitos. No se me había ocurrido hacerlo en otros países pero después de la experiencia he de decir que fue algo que no dejaré escapar en cualquier otra visita. Aprendí muchísimas cosas del lugar mientras iba pasando delante de cada detalle y además el guía era un chico maravilloso con una oratoria de envidiar. Nos ganó a todos los que participamos.

Aunque es gratuito, al finalizar te pide una voluntad según cómo te haya parecido, así que evidentemente es un trabajo bastante bueno porque cobra en un día lo que yo en un mes.

Empezamos en la plaza principal de Ámsterdam, llamada Plaza Dam. Aquí comenzó toda la historia de esta ciudad. Principalmente era sólo un pantano hasta que un pescador decidió levantar el primer dique y comenzar con lo que hoy en día es una de los lugares más bonitos de Europa.

En ella encontramos el ayuntamiento, la iglesia nueva (Nieuwe Kerk), el museo Madame Tussauds y un pequeño obelisco que representa al Monumento Nacional.

This time the trip was in four days, so I will make a bit more posts to explain every detail of this new travel.

Before go, I searched by internet and I found some free walking tours. I had not thought of doing so in other countries, but after the experience I have to say that  it was something that I must do in any other visit. I learned many things about the place while I was passing in front of every detail and also the guide was a wonderful guy, with a perfect speech. He was lovely.

Although it is free, they ask to complete a will according to how you have seemed, so it's obviously a pretty good job because he charges in a day than I earn in a month.

If you want to go traveling by Europe and you want to do any of them, you can find them in several countries and they are in both Spanish and English. Their website is: New Europe tours.

We started in the main square of Amsterdam, called Dam Square. Here began the history of this city. Mainly it was just a swamp until a fisherman decided to build the first dam and start with what today is one of the most beautiful places in Europe.

In it we find the Town Hall, the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk), Madame Tussauds museum and a small obelisk representing the National Monument.

Antes de pasar con la siguiente parte del tour quiero explicar que Ámsterdam es una ciudad en donde el poder civil siempre ha estado por encima del religioso. Esto responde a por qué es legal fumar cannabis o trabajar en la prostitución. Cosas impensables en cualquier otra parte de Europa y del mundo, diría yo.

Pues bien, el siguiente paseo fue por en medio del famoso Barrio Rojo de Ámsterdam, donde se encuentran todas las prostitutas. Antes de llegar a él pasamos por la iglesia vieja (Oude Kerk), en donde los marineros que venían a descargar mercancía a este país en su época de esplendor iban a confesarse después de desahogarse en los prostíbulos.

Acentuar que está terminantemente prohibido sacarle fotos a las chicas durante su trabajo. Todas ellas se encuentran detrás de escaparates esperando que se les acerque algún cliente. Si por alguna razón alguien las graba pueden salir de allí, coger la cámara o móvil de la persona en cuestión y tirarlo al suelo o al río.

Before moving on to the next part of the tour I want to explain that Amsterdam is a city where the civil power has always been above the religious. This answers why smoking cannabis is leave or work in prostitution. Things unthinkable elsewhere in Europe and the world, I think.

Well, the next stop was in the midst of the famous Red Light District of Amsterdam, where work all prostitutes. Before reaching it, we passed the Old Church (Oude Kerk), where the sailors went after to unload goods to confession after go in brothels.

Emphasize that it is strictly forbidden to take pictures of the women during their work. All of them are behind windows waiting for a customer approaches them. If for some reason someone can take a photo, they will go outside and take the camera or mobile of the person and throw it to the ground or river.

Luego pasamos a responder el por qué todas las casas en Ámsterdam están torcidas e inclinadas hacia adelante. Esto se debe a que los constructores de la época se vieron obligados a levantar viviendas en un pequeño espacio. Los canales y toda el agua que recorre esta ciudad hacían que se vieran con pocas zonas para levantar edificios y finalmente se hicieron estrechos, tanto la edificación como las puertas o ventanas. 

Pues bien, los marineros que nombré anteriormente no podían meter la mercancía por esas puertas tan estrechas, ni dejarlas en el suelo delante de las casas por el número de ratas de aquella época. Decidieron así construir las casas inclinadas un poco hacia adelante y poner en lo alto de ellas una polea para subir toda la mercancía en cuerdas y meterlas por las ventanas más altas que eran también más anchas. Al estar la casa torcida evitaba que la mercancía dañase el edificio.

Then they answer why all houses in Amsterdam are twisted and tilted forward. This is because the builders of the time were forced to raise houses in a small space. The channels and all the water that runs through this city made them look with few areas to erect buildings and eventually became small, both the building such as doors or windows.

Well, the sailors in other times could not to get in the goods through those doors  or leave them on the floor in front of the houses by the number of rats. They decided to build houses so inclined slightly forward and put on top of a pulley to pick up all the merchandise in ropes and put them by the upper windows which were also wider. With this the crooked house goods would not damage the building.

Un lugar mágico dentro de esta alborotada ciudad es un convento de monjas llamado Beginjhof. Aquí hoy en día la iglesia católica se ha unido con la protestante para ayudar a miles de personas que acuden con problemas graves desde cualquier parte del mundo, a los que les dan apoyo social o económico... 

Esto hace años era impensable e incluso hoy en día en otras partes del mundo las iglesias católicas y protestantes siguen siendo totalmente enemigas.

Aquí también se encuentra una de las dos primeras casas levantadas de Ámsterdam que sobrevivieron a varios incendios en la historia de esta ciudad.

A magical place in this sprawling city is a nunnery called Begijnhof. Here today the Catholic Church has joined with Protestant to help thousands of people who come with serious problems from anywhere in the world, which give them social or economic support ...

This years ago it was unthinkable, and even today in other parts of the world the Catholic and Protestant churches are totally enemy.

Here also there are the one of the first two houses built of Amsterdam who survived several fires in the history of this city.

Pasamos también por delante de las casas okupas de esta ciudad. Aquí es como no, legal entrar a una casa como okupa, aunque en caso de haber una idea para rediseñar los edificios y venderlos, los propietarios okupas tendrían que dejar sus "viviendas" y marcharse. Esto no había pasado hasta hace dos semanas y se formó una batalla campal. La policía tenía que echarlos y ellos se rebelaron prendiendo fuego y defendiéndose con palos y todo lo que encontraban.

We also passed the houses of this city squatters. This is also legal to enter a house as a squatter but if there is an idea to redesign the buildings and sell the squatters owners would have to leave their "homes". This had not happened until two weeks ago and formed a pitched battle. The police had to throw them out and they setting fire and fought back with sticks and everything they found.

Seguimos caminando por sus maravillosos canales y llegamos a una tienda en la que probamos queso gouda Holandés de dos años, ¡estaba riquísimo!

We continue walking along its beautiful canals and arrived at a shop we tried Dutch gouda cheese from two years, it was yummy!

 Para finalizar el recorrido, hablamos del tema más delicado pero para mí el más importante. La masacre que se hizo con los judíos por parte del régimen nazi quedó grabada en muchas de las personas de Ámsterdam. 

Fueron muchos los judíos que vinieron a vivir para huir de Alemania y de las barbaridades que querían hacer con ellos, pero aquí, igualmente debían llevar la insignia de la estrella y no les estaba permitido entrar a lugares tan básicos como cines, medios de transporte...

Llegó un momento en el que incluso dejaron de salir a la calle. De ahí lo famosa que se hizo la niña Ana Frank, que vivió y narró su vida en un diario, el cual ella pensaba que nadie leería y hoy en día es un best sellers mundial. Ella puede ser la gran protagonista, pero fueron muchos los judíos llevados a campos de exterminio y asesinados sin compasión y sin motivo alguno.

Pasamos por el barrio judío y el recorrido lo acabamos delante de la casa de esta niña que vivió al lado de una iglesia y sus campanadas, que no son como las de cualquier otra iglesia, porque tocan una melodía preciosa. Era lo único que los unió con la realidad durante los dos años que estuvieron escondidos. Esas campanadas fueron escuchadas muchas veces por la familia Frank y oírlas me causó  un dolor inmenso, porque no hay nada que entienda menos de la vida que la discriminación que existe en este planeta.

To end the tour, we talk about the most sensitive issue but for me the most important. The slaughter from the Jews by the Nazi regime it is the mind of many people of Amsterdam.

There were many Jews who came to live for flee Germany and the atrocities they wanted to do with them, but here also they had to wear the badge of the star and were not allowed to enter places as basic as cinemas, transport...

At one point they even stopped going outside. Hence what became known that the girl Anne Frank, who lived and narrated his life in a diary which she thought no one would read it and today is the world's best sellers book. She may be the main character, but many Jews were taken to concentration camps and killed without mercy and without cause.

We went through the Jewish quarter and finished tour in the house of Ana Frank who lived next to a church. Its bells that are not like any other church because they play a beautiful melody, it was the only thing that brought them together with the Actually during the two years they were hidden. Those bells were heard many times by the Frank family and when I listened them caused me immense pain, because there is nothing to I can't understand in this life that discrimination on this planet.

El guía acabó contándonos que varias veces trataron de llevarse a las personas judías de las peores maneras en las calles de Ámsterdam, pero llegó un momento en el que los ciudadanos de aquí vieron cómo estaban tratando a los judíos que, por encima de ser de otra religión, eran vecinos y amigos suyos y se rebelaron contra el mismísimo régimen nazi para que cesaran estas injusticias. E incluso se celebró en la plaza Dam la manifestación más multitudinaria de esta época, para mostrar su desacuerdo. 

Por esto hoy en día Ámsterdam es una ciudad con una libertad impensable en un mundo como el que vivimos y yo me quedo con la esencia de que aquí está claramente instalado el ser todos tratados iguales y aunque seamos humanamente diferentes, tenemos el derecho de ser totalmente libres...

Ojalá y algún día el planeta mire con buenos ojos a los amsterdammers y entiendan que es posible un mundo sin discriminación.

The guide ended up telling us that repeatedly the Nazis tried to take the Jewish people of the worst ways on the streets of Amsterdam, but there came a time when the citizens here saw as the Jews which were their friends and neighbors were tried and rebelled against the Nazis to stop these injustices. Even the single most massive demonstration of this era was formed in Dam Square to show their disagreement.

For this today Amsterdam is a city with an unthinkable freedom in a world as we live in and I know here all be equal treaties and although we are humanly different we have the right to be totally free...

Hopefully someday the planet look with favor to Amsterdammers and understand how a world without discrimination is possible.
